The College of Applied Science, Malampuzha functions under the University of Calicut. Accordingly, the Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Government of Kerala serves as the Pro Chancellor of the University and thereby as the Pro Chancellor of the College. The Pro Chancellor provides strategic direction for academic policy, research, and inclusive higher education initiatives.

Dr. R. Bindu, the incumbent Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice, Government of Kerala, is a distinguished academician and a prominent political leader. She formerly served as the Vice Principal and Head of the Department of English at Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur.
Born to N. Radhakrishnan and K. K. Shanthakumari in Kodungallur on May 31, 1967, Dr. Bindu began her public life as a student leader with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). She was elected as an MLA from the Irinjalakuda constituency in 2021.
At just 18, she became a member of the Calicut University Syndicate as a student representative, later serving as a teachers’ representative as well. She has also been part of the Calicut University Senate and the Academic Council.
An accomplished poet and writer in both English and Malayalam, Dr. Bindu completed her MA in English Literature with third rank from St. Joseph’s College, Irinjalakuda, affiliated to the University of Calicut. She earned her MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi with a dissertation on “Marxist Literary Criticism and Semiotics: An Inquiry into Meaning and Ideology.” Her PhD from the University of Calicut focused on “Destabilizing Patriarchal Discursive Practices: Subversion and Revision in Angela Carter’s Fiction.”
Dr. Bindu’s dedication to public service is evident from her two terms as a Thrissur Corporation Councillor and her tenure as the city’s first woman Mayor. She was also a member of the Advisory Board of the first Kerala State Higher Education Council and served as a State Resource Person of the National Literacy Mission.
A member of the Central Executive Committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), she also held positions in the AKPCTA and the CPI(M) Thrissur District Committee.
Beyond academia and politics, Dr. Bindu is a passionate artist. She has been trained in Bharatanatyam for 10 years and studied Kathakali for 13 years under Kalanilayam Raghavan.
Dr. Bindu is married to senior CPI(M) leader Shri A. Vijayaraghavan. The couple has a son, Harikrishnan, who is an advocate.
